Corn Stoves

Kay Culkins installed a corn burning stove in her home three years ago and she says it's one of the best decisions she's made...

"It's great, I love it, and it’s warm. It's a constant heat, I'll tell everybody about it," says Culkins.

In addition to heat that stove is bringing tremendous financial relief. Instead of paying around $2800 a season for propane, Culkins is paying around 400 dollars for corn...

"The corn stove is designed to heat your home but much cheaper using renewable fuels," says Jim Donegan of Donegan's Do It Best Hardware.

Donegan has been selling corn stoves at his mount morris hardware store for several years...but he's expecting sales this year to quadruple...

"Every year our sales have doubled, but this year is an exception. If we can get units in fast enough, we could be running 3-4 crews putting them in. With the fuel costs and the knowledge that people are finding out by talking to their neighbors that have stoves," says Donegan.

But Donegan is warning us to do our homework before purchasing a corn stove.

"Never buy one you haven't see running--look at safety and efficiency of unit. There's many people out there putting stoves on the market that are very questionable, and quite frankly, taking advantage of the public," says Donegan.

Using corn is efficient and 15% of the cost of natural gas...

"It's a lot better for the environment. It's a little more work--it's a lot easier to just go to the wall and turn up the dial, but for the little work we have to do, it's worth it," says Culkins.
