UPDATE: Police tell us 67-year-old Gail Hegarty of Belvidere passed away due to a traumatic brain injury that was sustained in the motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Pearl Street and U.S. Bypass 20 on Monday.
Hegarty was the driver of the Dodge Caravan involved in the motor vehicle versus semi accident.
The Belvidere Police Department is investigating the incident.
UPDATE: Belvidere Police tell us that the driver of the van hit by the semi is still in critical condition and that the passenger's condition has been changed from critical condition to serious condition.
Police tell us that a Dodge Caravan was traveling south on Pearl Street when it was struck by a westbound semi-tractor trailer at the intersection of Pearl Street and U.S. Bypass 20. The driver and the passenger of the van were transported to OSF Saint Anthony for their injuries.
The driver of the semi truck, 47-year-old Elias Salmons of Monroe, Indiana, was not injured.
Salmons was cited for disobeying a traffic control device.
The accident remains under investigation and the names of the occupants in the van were not being released at this time.
BELVIDERE (WIFR) -- In Belvidere, a semi-truck driver is accused of blowing through a red light and crashing into a car. Both people in that car were sent to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Belvidere Police tell us the semi was heading west on U.S. 20 when he T-Boned two women, who were going South on Pearl Street. The women are both in critical condition at OSF St. Anthony. The semi driver has been ticketed.
