WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) -- Around 5:45 the morning of March 12, 2013, emergency crews from the Win-Bur-Sew Fire Protection District, located in the Village of Winnebago, IL were responding to a possible rollover accident at Bypass 20 and Meridian Roads.
Emergency crews responding to that area found only a car in the ditch with no injuries. As additional emergency crews were responding on Highway 20, at the split between Business 20 and Highway 20, they found a car on its top in the ditch. While attempting to stop, the Win-Bur-Sew Rescue Squad encountered a large patch of black ice and slowly slid into the ditch then tipped on its side. Emergency crews inside the vehicle were all wearing their seat belts and were able to exit the vehicle with no extrication required. There were five Fire District members on board; one Firefighter/EMT was transported by the Fire District’s Ambulance to Rockford Memorial Hospital in Rockford, IL with minor injuries. The four other members all refused treatment at the scene.
The vehicle that the crew was attempting to assist was found to be unoccupied. Crews from Maggio’s Towing assisted in recovery of the vehicle and officials from the Fire District are assessing any damage to the vehicle and will make appropriate repairs. The Win-Bur-Sew Fire District operates with several fire engines, two ambulances, and other rescue vehicles and is fully mission capable despite the accident.
