CHICAGO (AP) -- United Airlines says it's cutting staffing, removing 70 of its fuel-guzzling airplanes from its fleet and slashing domestic capacity as it tries to cope with spiraling fuel prices.

United will cut an addition 900 to 1,100 salaried and management employees by the end of the year, in addition to the 500 employees it has already planned to lay off.

The Chicago-based carrier says the moves announced Wednesday are designed to the help it weather an "unprecedented fuel environment." The airline plans to retire 94 737's and a half dozen 747's. It also will do away with its low cost carrier, Ted.

Meanwhile, United says it will cut mainline domestic capacity by 17 percent.
