While security is the schools biggest issue, taxes are the city’s biggest issue. And that's why the discussion over home rule is already heating up. On Thursday night libertarians shared their feelings on the topic.
Most Rockford area libertarians do not want home rule. Right now the Rockford government has to get a referendum passed by voters to raise taxes. But if we switch to home rule, the city can start a new tax or pass an ordinance without getting the okay from voters.
One of the men who originally repealed home rule 20 years ago told libertarians at a meeting Thursday night that it would take power away from taxpayers. John Gile says the cost of living would go up if we bring it back, because politicians would be able to raise taxes whenever they want. Gile also warns the term itself can be deceiving.
