Rockford's Oldest School Gets a Face-lift

Garrison school has stood in downtown Rockford for over one hundred years. Recently the state recommended that it be listed as a historic property on the National Register of Historic Places. That would mean significant tax credits for the owners and revitalization for the school.

The school would be transformed into loft apartments with condo's being built elsewhere on the school grounds. Those involved with the project hope it will serve as a catalyst for improving the surrounding area.

The original structure was built in 1887 with an addition doubling the size of the school five years later. In 1920 a gymnasium was added. The gymnasium became a community center used for meetings, plays, and recreation. If all the pieces fall into place, that same community could see construction could start within a year.
