Rockford's 16th Murder Of The Year

It was Rockford’s 16th murder of the year. It also happened in an area of town that 23 News is continually reporting on as being a hotbed for crime.

Police say around 10:45 PM Wednesday night, a 27 year-old man was shot and killed on 12th Ave. on Rockford’s Southeast side.

Bernard Melton Junior of Loves Park was shot several times Wednesday night, and was later pronounced dead at Swedish American Hospital. Locals say many residents are afraid to speak out because they still live in the area and may have to face the people committing these crimes. Those who grew up in the Neighborhood claim thirty years ago the southeast side was a pleasant place to live, but drug dealers from Chicago are now holding the community hostage.
