Nearly 250 of the nation's mayors are gathering in Madison to discuss the critical needs of America’s cities, the annual meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

Rockford Mayor Doug Scott and Freeport mayor Jim Gitz are among the nearly 250 mayors attending this year's conference of mayors.

It’s a conference that highlights not only new security issues cities are facing since Sept. 11, but also everyday issues that haven't disappeared.

Hundreds of mayors representing the country's largest cities are in Madison Wisconsin to address the critical needs of America’s cities.

Among the issues affecting working families, affordable housing, which is something Rockford Mayor Doug Scott is very interesting in discussing during the conference.

Another issue these mayors's are interesting in, homeland security. In fact, seven out of 10 mayors say they're very concerned with a biological or chemical threat, even here in the stateline. Which is why Mayor Scott and others will discuss ways to get additional resources for emergency preparedness and reimbursement for security costs.

During the conference, the mayors will also vote to adopt 59 policy resolutions on key issues in the areas of housing, health care, education and more.
