The 244th Army Liaison Team based in Machesney Park got its orders to deploy in November. For the past two months, members have been training for their mission in Asia.
This is Sgt. Lacy Lifka-Nelson's first deployment. For the past two months, she and the other 24 members of the Army Liaison Team have been working up to saying good-bye. Sgt. Lifka-Nelson leaves behind her husband and two children.
It's no different for Mary Nichols whose 25-year-old daughter Wendy is on her way to Asia. This National Guard unit is trained to facilitate information to allied troops. While the troops work to eliminate miscommunication, keeping in touch with family will be a bigger challenge and for the most part by e-mail.
These tough times will not be over anytime soon. The orders they received are for a year to help support Operation Enduring Freedom.
