The newlywed couple from Beloit that was in a helicopter crash in Hawaii over the weekend shared their story Tuesday. Karen and Bill Thorson were on a tour of the island of Kauai with Karen’s father, Laverne Clifton.
The couple says they ran into thick fog and rain, and within 30 seconds they were just inches above the water. The helicopter started to climb again but a gust of wind smashed it into the water. The pilot yelled for everyone to get out. After the helicopter crashed, the couple emerged to the surface, Bill went under water to grab Laverne, who was unconscious; the couple says they were in the water for more than an hour. They finally came upon some surfers, who helped them to shore.
