Governor Rod Blagojevich signed legislation Saturday that requires either an external device that attaches to the handgun or a locking mechanism built into the gun. The law is effective January 1st.
Blagojevich says the bill will prevent accidental shootings by
children. It was sponsored by Representative Deborah Graham and Senator Don Harmon, both Democrats from Oak Park.
Violators face up to six months in jail and a minimum fine of
one-thousand dollars. Subsequent violations are punishable by up to
one year in jail.
The measure is the second new law in two days that deals with
guns. Yesterday, Blagojevich signed a bill that requires background
checks on potential firearms buyers at gun shows.
