A long time journalist, public figure, and friend is stepping down.
WROK’s Fred Speer has already announced his retirement, set for Dec. 31.

Over the years, Speer has led reporting on major stories, and captured the hearts and respect of several local leaders.
Speer was born and raised in Rockford, graduating from West High School, and Columbia College in Chicago.
After a brief radio job in Michigan, he returned home, and never left.
