Drought Update

The drought has been slowly coming on for months, but now it has reached a new level. We are now under an extreme drought, which is the second worst classification of drought severity.

As far as corn is concerned, it is already getting too late and significant losses are unavoidable, but other crops like soybeans still have a chance and everyone’s lawns and gardens still need water as well. These concerns prompted the National Weather Service to have a meeting.

Though any rain will help, what is most important is the long-term forecast through the next few months. Unfortunately, the Climate Prediction Center says that we have equal chance of both below normal rain and above normal rain.
