The driving center in Freeport is about to leave its current building. The lease is up at the end of the month, and Stephenson county residents are wary of what’s to come.
At the end of June, the owner of the building says the Secretary of State's office told him they would not be renewing the lease. That was two months ago and there is no new deal signed. But a spokesperson from the State’s office told 23 News the county will not be neglected.
If a temporary location can not be found the state is willing to bring resources up from Springfield. There are multiple “mobile units” that could be used in Freeport as a temporary solution.
Some residents are concerned the continued moving will cause confusion among those seeking the driving station. Whether or not the move will be a problem is yet to be found, but the state is firm on their stance. They say the Secretary of States Office will not abandon Stephenson County and services will continue.
