Public Works crews were busy on Saturday and Sunday working to improve road conditions. That is just one department hit hardest by the city's 2003 budget. On Saturday, Mayor Doug Scott, Rockford Alderman, and department heads met to dissect the proposed 2003 budget.
In the first of two sessions various departments explained where cuts are coming from and what money is being shifted. Already 47 city employees have been laid off to tackle the eight million dollar shortfall. The Public Works department has laid off 9 employees. The director told alderman that this would affect basic street maintenance and make for a slower response time to community calls.
The next meeting is Jan. 11, the public is welcome to this special budget meeting. The city council has until March 31 to approve the 2003 budget.
