More than $100,000 arrives Thursday for the Pretzel City to ultimately help folks get around town when they can't catch a ride of their own. Freeport Mayor George Gaulrapp accepted the $120,000 check from Walmart. It's earmarked for a feasibility study on a public transportation system. The mayor says his office fields calls from folks in town about the need for better service, including some from one dialysis center. The administrator there says many patients don't drive and current options aren't cutting it. "Our patients are telling us that they have an extended wait for a long period of time. When they finish their treatment, they're not feeling well, they're tired, some can be as long as an hour or more to get their cab," said Anita Daraska, Administrator at Davita Dialysis in Freeport. The city's only cab provider has struggled lately with broken down cars and losing drivers. As for the feasibility study, the city hopes to start work on it in the next 30 to 60 days. And continue lobbying Springfield for additional money to build a transit system.
