Mundelein-based Medline has recalled an alcohol-free mouthwash and a personal hygiene kit containing the same mouthwash. Irving, Texas-based Carrington Labs, which manufactures the mouthwash, recalled the mouthwash because it may contain Burkholderia cepacia. There have been two hospital illnesses in two states associated with the mouthwash, which was distributed to hospitals, medical centers and long-term care facilities nationwide. Burkholderia cepacia -- which is often resistant to common antibiotics, poses little risk to healthy people -- but those with weakened immune systems or chronic lung diseases such as cystic fibrosis may be susceptible to infections. Customers with the affected product should stop using it and call i-800-MEDLINE or visit www.medline.com for details.
