Dozens of area volunteers are just weeks away from giving their community a fresh coating of hope.
Next month, volunteers will paint 27 homes in Rockford and Ogle counties. It's part of the 17th annual Metro Paint-a-Thon where volunteers give homes a new look for residents who cannot paint because of age or disability.
Today's orientation gave the helpers their home assignments for the August 13 Salvation Army event.
"It's just individuals that have a heart for the community and for people, and no real experience is needed, just be able to slap paint on a home and have a good time doing it as well," the Salvation Army's Michael Sjogren said.
23 WIFR is co-sponsoring the 17th annual Metro Paint-a-Thon. After the paint dries for this year's event, volunteers will have painted 650 homes in the Rock River Valley.
