A local soldier is about to give two years of his life to serve as a medic in Kuwait.
Fernando Fustero's coworkers at Rockford Memorial Hospital threw a going away party for him Thursday. Fustero is a dialysis patient care technician who takes care of chronically ill kidney patients every day.
His co-workers say he earned the title shining star caregiver because he's always teasing and making the patients smile. Fustero is a petty officer, third class medic. He is sad to leave his friends and family but says he is looking forward to helping his military family in Kuwait.
