Chicago Police officials say they've been sending shipments to the Illinois State Police crime lab since January. The shipments from Chicago evidence vaults total more than 1,200 untested DNA samples.
The samples are from rape evidence kits and may hold clues that could lead to identification of suspects.
The Illinois State Police earlier this year reported reducing its backlog of untested DNA to the lowest level in five years.
Gov. Rod Blagojevich directed $2.6 million in funding to outsource analysis of DNA cases last year to help clear the backlog.
