Members of YouthBuild Rockford gave the county board a glimpse of what is going through the minds of Rockford's youth. They believe tougher laws and an increased police force won’t stop violence, but preventative measures can.
This comes on the heels of an increasing number of murders in Rockford and a new joint proposal by city and county officials to reduce violent crimes. While the new plan does include preventative measures like strengthening community base programs it is also based on increasing law enforcement presence in high crime areas.
Members of YouthBuild say busting people in violent crime hot spots isn't the answer. The say programs are needed to help rehabilitate criminals instead of throwing them in jail for a few years then putting them right back on the streets.
