Rockford Health Council spent a year surveying more than 3,000 minorities in our community. The results show that many minorities do not have access to health insurance or dental care.
Out of all the findings, the president of a local non-profit Latin organization is most concerned about education.
"Sometimes the highest education person in a family is the youngest," says Marco Lenis, president of La Voz Latina.
Fifty six percent of Hispanics in Winnebago County do not have a high school degree. That number is much higher than the ratio of African-Americans and Caucasians who do not complete school.
La Voz Latina is helping to change that statistic. The organization tutors 36 Latino high school students every day, and 95 percent of them graduate.
