Chicago Republican Ron Gidwitz says he's discouraged by the direction the state has taken during Gov. Rod Blagojevich's first term. He says the Democrat doesn't lead the Legislature well and has been fiscally imprudent.
Blagojevich spokesman Pete Giangreco, however, contends the governor "has been busy cleaning up the mess" Gidwitz left at the Board of Education by eliminating a teacher certification backlog and unnecessary regulations.
Gidwitz served as chairman of the State Board of Education from 1999 to 2004. The 60-year-old was president and CEO of cosmetic giant Helene Curtis before that.
