Another project downtown is the Winnebago County Justice Center. This project is going to permanently change the make-up of downtown Rockford, too.
Architects worked to make sure the building fits into the downtown surroundings. The project is guaranteed to bring in as many as 400 jobs. The total cost to build the jail is about $140 million.
Winnebago County Board Chair Scott Christiansen says construction and financing costs are saving the county money. Bids for the pre-cast cells were rejected and have come back with a $2.8 million in savings.
The interest rate in the second phase of financing is lower than anticipated resulting in $5.5 million. That means the county is saving over $8 million.
