That base is home to the 183rd Fighter Wing, which the military wants to move out of Illinois.
Sam Skinner is the only Illinois native on the nine-member Base Realignment and Closure Commission. He's slated to tour the Springfield base while three other commissioners convene a public hearing in St. Louis.
Representatives from Illinois and other Midwestern states at that meeting will try to persuade the commissioners to change their minds about the proposed cuts.
In addition to 163 positions that would be moved out of Springfield, Illinois stands to lose more than 3,200 jobs at Rock Island Arsenal and the Great Lakes Naval Training Center.
