One of Belvidere High School's graduates who died serving our country is now remembered with a special memorial.
Friends and family of the late Branden Ramey dedicated a red oak tree and plaque in front of Belvidere High School. The 22-year-old Marine died seven months ago while serving in Iraq.
Speakers praised Ramey's life of service and self-sacrifice in both Belvidere, and overseas. Ramey's fiancée hopes the memorial will strike a chord with present and future Belvidere students.
"It should be motivation for students because they see Branden, who went to school here and did so many things. He went into the military after high school. He did more in his 22 years that most people do in their entire lives," Stacey Lee said.
The ceremony for Branden Ramey also included the reading of a letter from President George W. Bush, who honored Ramey's sacrifice in the War on Terror.
