Plane Crash

Tuesday night the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department began investigating a plane crash.

This was a home-built single engine two seated Ultralight plane that crashed around 6:20 p.m. Tuesday night in the middle of farmland. Nearby farmers say they noticed the plane going over their land several times and got curious.

This is what the farmers found in the 6500 block of Manchester. The field is near the Illinois Stateline. One person was flying the Ultralight. The Winnebago County coroner's office has identified the man as 58-year-old Andrew Hurley from South Beloit. It's not known where Hurley was going if he was attempting to land at a very small and private landing strip near-by. He may have been trying to make it to the Beloit Airport.

Deputy Chief Kurt Ditzler with the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department says, “Witnesses say it sounded alright and then it just dropped out of the sky. We’ve contact the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.”

An autopsy is set for Wednesday. It's most likely that Hurley died from massive internal injuries. The area will be secured Tuesday night by the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department until investigators from the FAA and the NTSB arrive on the scene Wednesday morning.
