Man Charged in Virgin Mary Defacing

Chicago police spokesman David Banks says authorities charged Victor Gonzalez with criminal damage to state supported property, a misdemeanor.

Banks says a man on a bicycle was seen around 11:30 Thursday night writing with black shoe polish the words "Big Lie" on the image.

Banks also says authorities then painted over the image because it had been defaced.

Hundreds of people have visited the wall since last month, claiming they've seen an image of the Virgin Mary, but officials from the Illinois Department of Transportation have said they believed the shape was caused by salt run-off from the overpass above.
