New Trustee Calls Chief Illiniwek Debate a “Distraction”

David Dorris says the debate is diverting attention from more important issues. The Bloomington attorney says he can't understand the passions on either side of the debate.

Supporters say the mascot is a symbol of reverence for American Indians' contribution to Illinois history, while opponents counter it is racially offensive and demeaning.

U of I trustees agreed last year to review the debate over the Chief and reach a consensus conclusion, but no timetable has been set for a decision.

Dorris said the Chief should be retired if it's harming minorities or the university. The Illinois Senate confirmed Dorris' appointment Thursday.
