Urban Sprawl Growing Beyond Chicago Collar Counties

The Census Thursday says cheaper housing has drawn people beyond Chicago's five collar counties, and that's helping to make Kendall County the second fastest growing county in the nation last year.

Kendall's population jumped 8.3 percent to more than 72,500 people. That's up from about 67,000 in 2003.

For senior county planner Dale Powers, the appeal is easy to see. He says Kendall County residents are close enough to get to Chicago, but they can also drive 20 minutes west and be in open farm fields.

The Census says the only county to outpace Kendall last year was Flagler County on Florida's east coast where the population grew 10 percent.
