Major Vacuum Recall

Hoover is telling hundreds of thousands of owners to stop using their vacuum cleaners because some of the handles may smoke, melt or even catch fire.

Hoover is recalling 636,000 self-propelled uprights after fielding about 250 reports of trouble with the on/off switch.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says the company knows of just one injury because of the defect. A minor burn was caused by overheating. The recall covers nine upright models sold between May of 1998 and July of 2000.

Hoover says owners of the vacuums, which originally were priced around $260 dollars, can contact the company for a free repair.

The recall covers the following models: U6423-900, U6425-900, U6425-950, U6445-900, U6445-960, U6449-900, U6450-900, U6451-900 and U6455-900.

The beginning of the serial numbers range from 0598 to 1199.

Consumers can contact the company by visiting www.maytag.com or www.hoover.com, or by calling 800-250-6075, weekdays 8 a.m.-5 p.m. EST.
