Sheila Simon is a member of the Carbondale City Council. That's a problem because the Illinois Riverboat Gambling Act bans Gaming Board members from serving on any other paid public body.
Gov. Rod Blagojevich appointed Simon to the Gaming board last month, and Blagojevich spokeswoman Abby Ottenhoff confirms that the governor's office plans to introduce legislation to change the Gambling Act to get rid of the rule that would bar her from serving.
Cindi Canary of the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform says she has nothing but praise for Simon, but Canary says changing the Gambling Act could lead to conflicts of interest in the future.
