The flag at the White House was lowered Saturday in respect of the passing of Pope John Paul II. Bush has ordered that flags on public buildings across America be lowered and stay that way until the pontiff is buried.
Appearing at the White House with the First Lady at his side, the president marked the pontiff's passing by calling him a "humble, wise and fearless priest who became one of history's great moral leaders."
Aides say Bush is likely to travel to Rome for the funeral once final arrangements are made.
