Rockford City Council Delays Action on Shortfall

Rockford city council members decided not to vote on dipping into the city's general fund to cover budget shortfalls.

Council members moved the vote on the so-called budget adjustment to next week. A city council committee did approve taking about $2 million from a general fund to cover a $7 million shortfall in its general fund for the 2002 fiscal year.

If the full council approves it next week, the money would pay for labor costs associated with the new labor contract and overtime budget for Rockford Police, and a new 3-1-1 telephone service for non emergency services.
