Several Rockton residents upset about a minimum 70 percent jump in their sanitary district bill had a chance to sound off to the members of the Rockton Sanitary District.
At the end of last year, the three member district raised the service rates 40 percent to try to make up a two year shortfall which totaled over $200,000. The district also eliminated a 30 percent summer discount.
The discounted summer rate had been applied simply because the water people use on their gardens, lawns or pools is not processed by the districts wastewater treatment service.
With the discount eliminated plus the increased fees, some residents said their bills jumped more than 100 percent over the summer. The sanitary district said it hopes to be able to re-instate a summer discount next year. They will look into that after the final billing period this year.
