Shooting Leaves Two Hospitalized

Two people are hospitalized after a double shooting over night that has Rockford police still searching for one of the suspects. The shootings occurred on the 800 block of Fifth Street. Police have captured one man but another suspect is still at large.

The shootings happened around eleven o'clock Saturday night when the victims say they were just watching TV in their house when six to eight shots entered their apartment striking them.

Police say when they arrived they found a maroon car fleeing the scene and gave chase. The pursuit lasted a few minutes until the driver of the car lost control and hit a tree near 10th and 8th St. The two suspects then fled on foot and jumped off a bridge into a creek in an attempt to elude police. One man was eventually caught.

He is 22-year-old Shabaka Boyd...he is being held in the Winnebago County Jail on $250,000 bond. He is currently charged with resisting arrest, obstruction of justice and unlawful use of a weapon.

Two police officers were hurt during this pursuit with minor injuries, but were treated and released from Swedish American Hospital.

The victims are identified as 23-year-old Jasmine Pittman and 52-year-old Kirby Grove-Pittman has a shattered pelvis bone and had to have one of her fingers removed.
Grove was shot in the hand. Both are now listed in fair condition as Swedish American hospital.

Police say this crime happened in a part of downtown where crime is on the rise.
"There have been problems here before and it could very well be drug related," said Sgt. Bruce Scott, Rockford Tactical Unit.

Rockford police have not charged Boyd yet with either of these shootings. They say they will examine the gun found in his car along with shell casings found at the crime scene to determine if additional charges should be brought against him.
