State funds make up about 80 percent of the budget for MotherHouse, but the $179,000 sought by the agency for the fiscal year starting in June was cut by the governor's office in his budget proposal.
Sen. Dave Syverson of Rockford and other officials are trying to get the money for MotherHouse restored. The home is open 24 hours a day, every day of the week. Families
use it for free child care in times of crisis.
Director Melony Walsh says mothers often drop off children when they have medical or mental health appointments, need to appear in court or are looking for jobs or housing.
