Pharmacy Closures

Financial pressures are forcing Rockford Health System's clinic pharmacies to close their doors at the end of the year. A decision customers are not happy about.

When loves park resident Bonita Wheeler learned that Rockford Clinic was closing its pharmacies, she immediately thought of her 89-year-old grandmother who's been patronizing the pharmacy for decades.

"It was right down the road. She didn't have to go through the hassle of a big market and getting to the pharmacy. It's going to effect a lot of elderly people,” comments Wheeler.

But the closure will also impact wheeler and her family, which spends about $800 a month on prescriptions. They went to the clinic pharmacy because the clinic would bill their insurance company. Now they'll have to pay upfront.

"When we switched to Rockford Clinic it was more expensive but it was worth the tradeoff because we didn't have to pay out of pocket,” Wheeler says.

Rockford Clinic officials would not comment on camera but say competition from other stores forced them to close and they want to focus resources on the clinic not the pharmacy.

"There's a lot of people that don't even have a clue this is happening and they'll be very upset and concerned,” adds Wheeler.
