Rockford School District custodians will be out of a job at the end of this school year. In a vote of five to two, the School Board reaffirmed a decision to hire SBM Maintenance, therefore laying off 186 district custodians.
The district's custodial union had agreed to deeper pay concessions last week in a last ditch effort to save their jobs.
A majority of the board members argued that their February 8 vote to begin negotiations with SBM was legally binding and they had to move forward with the private company.
The custodial union will now work on severance packages for employees.
