Illinois Farmers Have Record Corn Crop

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the state produced about two billion, 88 million bushels of corn from 11.6 million acres. That's an average yield of 180 bushels per acre.

The crop was 15 percent larger than the record that was set in 2003.

Illinois remains the nation's second-leading corn producer behind Iowa. The Hawkeye State produced just over 2.2 billion bushels, or about 181 bushels per acre.

The corn harvest nationwide reached 11.8 billion bushels, a 17 percent increase from last year's previous record of 10.1 billion bushels.
