State Redesigns License for Underage Drivers

Beginning Jan. 1, Illinois drivers under 21 will be issued newly designed vertical licenses.

Secretary of State Jesse White spokeswoman Elizabeth Kaufman says the change makes the new licenses easily distinguishable from older people who can legally drink. She says the change won't cost taxpayers any additional money.

The licenses will also include bolder versions of the "under 18" and "under 21" lettering currently on the traditional horizontal licenses.

Drivers now under 21 will be able to keep their current licenses.
