Twice in her life the Burlington woman was surprised with a Christmas Eve ceremony, both times wedded to Francis Southey. And both times Ruth had no idea what was about to happen.
On Christmas Eve, 1942, Francis planned the wedding while he was stationed in Texas. Ruth says she just planned to visit him for Christmas, and when she got there he had the wedding arranged.
The couple now live at the Waterford Senior Living facility. And today, staff there arranged the same wedding surprise 65 years later.
The couple renewed their vows in front of three generations of teary-eyed family and friends.
The 65th anniversary is a milestone Ruth always sensed would come. She quotes advice from her mother that marriage is for life, and that's what they followed.
