The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Monday says the recall affects four- and five-door Focus vehicles from the 2000 to 2002 model years.
All of the vehicles were sold or are registered in 20 eastern and Midwestern states, including Illinois.
The defect is caused by corrosion of the latch. The door may be difficult to open and close, and eventually may not close at all.
(The recall also involves the District of Columbia and the following states: Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia and Wisconsin.)
