UPDATE: One of the men convicted in the beating death of 53-year-old Bobby Boyd will spend the next 20 years in prison. Dusty Ball was sentenced today.

Police say he and Kevin Sago severely beat Boyd in October of 2010 on South Pierpont Avenue.

Boyd lived in a nursing home for six months before he passed away.


Rockford (WIFR) -- Eight months after being severely beaten in an assault, a Rockford man is believed to have died from his injuries.

According to the Winnebago County Coroner's Office, Bobby Boyd, 53, was pronounced dead at a local nursing home on Wednesday, April 27.

On October 16, 2010, Boyd suffered severe head trauma when he was was beaten in the 700 Block of South Pierpont Avenue. Once Boyd was discharged from the hospital he was admitted to the nursing home.

The Winnebago County Coroner says he died of blunt force trauma. Police say that makes this the sixth murder in the past two weeks: the ninth of the year.

An autopsy will be performed today to determine the cause of death.

Rockford police have since arrested Dusty Ball, 31, Kevin Sago, 42. They were both charged with attempted murder. We’re told more charges could follow.

Rockford’s murder count in 2011 has tripled from just two weeks ago.

    its a shame what they did to him no one deserves that rick was a amazing person an great father i didnt kno him well but that time i did talk to him for a little bit i could tell he was a great man i hope the people who did this to him pays for it my condolence goes out the his family you guys are in my prayers so sorry to hear what happen r.i.p rick

    It is tragic what happened to this man. I work at the nursing home that he was at and unfortunately he was not the only person struggling to recover from injuries sustained in an assault. People need to learn to think before they act because actions have consequences.

    Bob also known as Rick suffered along 6 mos . It was like the beating was still going on. Rick is in a far better place where we know he won`t suffer anymore rip rick i hope you find the peace in death that you didn`t have in life we all love you

    What a tragedy , a man fights for life for so long my heart goes out to the family. He is with god now there are angel taking care of him now. May you find peace knowing he not suffering no more

    Such a shame...my thoughts and prayers to the family and friends. I just dont see how people can be so cruel to others
