Jail Tours

In an effort to put a face on the county's jail overcrowding problem, and to sell the need for a new jail, the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department has opened up the jail to tours.

Beginning Thursday night, and running every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 9 a.m., you can see the problems that exist inside the county lock-up.

Sheriff Dick Meyers believes that by seeing for yourself the conditions in which inmates live, you might be more likely to support the November fifth referendum asking for an increase in the county's sales tax.

The county was looking at a 1,200-bed plan, but that has now been reduced to 975 beds for inmates.

The cost of the new jail has also been reduced by $20-million.
