Gay Rights Legislation

Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich says he will sign legislation sent him Tuesday that would ban discrimination of gays and lesbians.

The House voted 65 to 51, following approval in the Senate Monday. It prohibits discriminating against people because of "sexual orientation" in housing, employment, credit and other areas.

Illinois would join 13 states and Washington, DC that have similar laws. Matt Foreman of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force says it's a "great day for all gay Americans."

Supporters have said it's simply a matter of civil rights already ensured based on race or religion.

Opponents have said it opens the door to gay marriage and would infringe on religious organizations' rights.

The bill is SB3186.
