Wisconsin Near Top in Taxes

The Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance says the state's income tax averaged $960 per capita in 2003. The group's research shows the state's per capita average is about 27 percent higher than the average for those states.

Wisconsin ranked eighth in 2001 and 2002. The alliance says higher-income taxpayers in the Badger State tend to pay comparatively more in state income taxes than similar taxpayers in other states.

Among other findings, Wisconsin income tax collections in 2003 were about $32 per 1,000. Only Oregon and New York are higher.

Wisconsin's individual income taxes made up about 43 percent of total taxes in 2003, eighth among the 43 states reporting collections.
