Police say Tuesday night around 10 p.m. a man and woman with their year-and-a-half-old baby pulled up to the front doors of Loredo Liquor on Main Street.
The driver got out of the car and went into the store. Two men then approached the car. One of the men, armed with a handgun, got in behind the wheel. The other man forced the woman out of the passenger side. The woman told the assailants that her baby was still in the car, but the men drove off anyway.
The car was recovered about an hour later on Auburn Street, but the suspects have not been located. The baby was found crying and wondering around on a nearby side street.
Dept. Chief Dominic Iasparro says, "There was a person on the street that saw the child and realized there were squad cars across the street and went to that location to turn it into the officers."
Police say that it's not uncommon for children to be taken by car thieves unknowingly, but as far as they know, this is the first time in Rockford that carjackers were aware that they weren't only taking a car but, someone's child as well.
