The Illinois Toll Highway Authority says drivers are rushing to buy I-PASS before tolls go up next year. Starting on January 1, tolls will double for motorists who pay cash, while those using the I-PASS electronic toll system will still pay the old rate.
Tollway Executive Director Jack Hartman says people are lining up to buy I-PASS at the tollway's headquarters in the Chicago suburb of Downers Grove. The devices are also available at Jewel-Osco stores, although some are selling out each day.
Tollway officials are afraid there will be a last-minute rush to get a transponder, so they're encouraging people to act now.
