On Wednesday, Rockford Memorial Hospital hosted an international discussion of sorts, as local emergency workers and one of Great Britain's top counter-terrorism minds shared ideas on how to keep the Stateline, and the United States, safe.

Expert Christopher McCarthy focused his 90-minute presentation on protecting against CBRN, or chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear attacks.

The longtime police officer emphasized to the emergency responders the importance of quick response and keeping the public calm in the event of such an attack.

McCarthy says while he enjoys hearing American perspectives to terrorism, and collaborating on ideas to make the world safer on both sides of the big pond.

“No longer are we just looking at conventional weapons. We’re looking at any kind of suspicious activity with chemicals in places that normally wouldn’t be there,” McCarthy explains.

The terrorism expert will also speak this weekend in Chicago.
